Read on for all of the reasons why cannabis is the new superfood and why you need to start incorporating it into your diet today! Know your source and try to only consume raw cannabis that has not been treated with pesticides or fungicides for the ultimate health benefits. Try to find organically grown plants if possible.
A young woman by the name of Kristen Peskuski was plagued with many illnesses from day one of birth. By the age of 23, she had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, and endometriosis. She had fought many infections and it seemed like she was constantly taking antibiotics, which eventually she became allergic to. After years of being prescribed all different kinds of medications by various doctors, she quit all of them, cold turkey. Kristen had experimented with cannabis for a few years and became curious as to why she felt better and had fewer infections when using it. After researching and studying the endogenous cannabinoid system, she was convinced she had an endocannabinoid deficiency. Some people don’t manufacture enough cannabinoids naturally which can lead to many illnesses such as irritable bowel syndrome, glaucoma, and chronic migraines.
Kristen Peskuski truly believes that cannabis saved her life; she explains that “when I take marijuana juice, I feel more focused, more alert. I breathe better. I have neither heartburn nor gastric disorders, I don’t feel muscle weakness or pelvic and back pains. Now that I feel good, my aim is to help other people with the same problem than mine, so they have all the information on raw cannabis juice.”
The endocannabinoid system is basically a series of naturally occurring compounds and receptors in the brain that regulate a variety of physiological and cognitive processes including fertility, pre- and postnatal development, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory. Essentially, it’s the way cells communicate with each other. Kristen decided to completely immerse herself into life using medicinal marijuana. Not only did the medicine cure her of most of her illnesses but she was even able to get pregnant after being told she could never have kids by all of her doctors.
How is Raw Cannabis Is The New Superfood?
Raw cannabis contains a multitude of nutritional benefits and cannabinoids that can improve your life, especially if you suffer from an endocannabinoid deficiency.
Cannabinoid Acids –
- Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid – THC-A, plays a role in a variety of physiological processes such as inflammation, pain-sensation, insulin production, and appetite. Recently it was discovered to have similar effects for epilepsy and seizures as CBD.
- Cannabidolic Acid – CBD-A, also has similar processes but it is gaining a lot of attention from medical specialists for its cancer-fighting properties. In a recent study, researchers at Hiroshima International University discovered a possible way that CBD-A inhibits an enzyme in highly-aggressive breast cancer tumors and may even prevent it from spreading.
When THC-A and CBD-A are heated, they lose carbon atoms forming THC and CBD which do not have as potent of healing properties. More research is needed for all cannabinoid acids and their health benefits which makes me very excited to see what future studies will be published in the near future.
Fiber – cannabis is just another leafy green vegetable put on this planet to be consumed for our benefit. Just like spinach and kale, cannabis leaves are packed full of fiber which we need to incorporate into our daily diet to maintain proper digestion. A high fiber diet also helps to control blood sugar levels and lowers cholesterol. Add some leaves to a smoothie, fresh vegetable dip or shred it into a salad.
Vitamins & Minerals – the fan leaves are loaded with vitamins and minerals such as folate for DNA synthesis and repair, vitamin C for immune function, vitamin K for transporting calcium throughout the body and iron which is essential for healthy blood.
Antioxidants – cannabis is possibly the most therapeutic plant on the planet as it contains more antioxidants than any kind of over-the-counter supplement. Our bodies naturally produce antioxidants to remove damaged cells from the body caused by oxidative stress. Some causes of oxidative stress are air pollution, emotional stress, chemicals in our water and food. With all of these factors on the rise, our bodies are not able to make enough antioxidants to fully protect ourselves.
Pain Relief – cannabis works to reduce pain by making it more bearable. Cannabinoids from the plant bind with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and throughout the body. The result is significant relief from pain, nausea or depression.
Non-Psychoactive – fresh cannabis leaves or flowers can be consumed without causing the euphoric feeling of being high. In the raw form, it contains THC-A and CBD-A which do not have the same effects as THC and CBD. There are a lot more health benefits when consuming the raw plant matter compared to smoking the dried and cured bud that is psychoactive.*
Phytochemicals/Phytonutrients – naturally occurring compounds found in fruits and plants are responsible for protective health benefits. They are also responsible for the colour, flavour and smell of plant foods. Some of the phytochemical compounds include:
- Terpenes – found within the trichomes, are responsible for the aroma and flavour of the flowers. The terpenes can act as an antidepressant and increase dopamine activity.
- Flavonoids – about 20 flavonoids have been identified within the cannabis plant. They are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties and immune system benefits. People who maintain diets high in flavonoids are less at risk for heart disease, heart attacks, cancer, diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease as well as other common diseases.
Healthy Fats – all parts of the plant have proven to be beneficial to our health, especially the hemp seeds. The seeds, also known as hemp hearts, contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which promote cardiovascular health. They are high in gamma-linolenic acid which is an essential omega-6 fatty acid proven to naturally balance hormones.
- Perfect Protein – Hemp seeds are considered the perfect protein because they contain all 20 amino acids and all 9 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce.
Environmentally Friendly & Sustainable – while this may not ease your body it will ease your mind while consuming it. The cannabis or hemp plant is quite resistant to drought and pests, they grow well-developed root systems preventing soil erosion, require less water with respect to other crops and grows fairly quickly.
Dosage – If you heat it, the recommended dose is around 10mg, if it’s raw, then the dose is around 1,000-2,000mg. This dose is recommended by Dr. William Courtney, a medical doctor and monumental advocate of the “raw greens” cannabis movement. The best way to consume this large of a dose is to juice it. Dr. Courtney suggests 20-30 big shade leaves or 2-3 raw buds (2-3 inches in length) per day for therapeutic benefits.
When it comes down to it, there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that raw cannabis is the new superfood. There are more reports that smoking cannabis may not treat the disease, only the symptoms. Now, I know that most cannabis is used for its psychoactive effects and I’m not telling you to give it up if that’s your thing, but I highly encourage you to try incorporating some raw cannabis into your diet as well, what do you have to lose?
I am not a doctor, scientist or anywhere near a specialist when it comes to cannabis or cannabis-related products. I am simply a woman who has become intrigued about the healing powers of the glorious pot plant. Please consult with your health practitioner before starting any new health regime and for the proper dosage for your body.
