What made you decide to become a chef?
I started cooking when I was 5 years old, right after my grandfather passed away, my grandma taught me how to fry my first egg. What was special about her teaching me on this day, was she couldn’t see me & I couldn’t see her, she verbally instructed me as I did exactly what she said. After that, I was hooked & food became an experience I had to have all the time.
Have you always cooked with cannabis? If no, why did you make the transition of becoming a cannabis chef?
No, I had been a chef for about 10 years before cannabis cooking came into my life. The transition came sometime after I moved to California & found that people were really into the Culinary Cannabis Movement!
Is there a chef you admire the most, who & why?
I’ve always really admired Bobby Flay. His approach cooking, the way he structures recipes has always peaked my interest & kept me watching all these years.
What is your signature dish or a favorite recipe you like to make?
Pinpointing a signature dish might be difficult, but I really enjoy making pizza, it’s probably my favorite food so naturally, I’ve become slightly obsessed with making the perfect pizza dough.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Sometime before I cooked for myself. my family & I took a trip to visit my father’s family in South Carolina. It was there I got to experience my first freshly caught blue crab. Whenever I need to feel inspired, I recall this moment and how I thought I’d never taste anything so amazing ever again but if I could I’d want to every day for the rest of my life.
What are some of the essential ingredients that you couldn’t live without?
I couldn’t live without EVOO, sea salt, and freshly cracked pepper. I probably wouldn’t live long without basil and rosemary either… but who could.
Rya is just one of the many cannabis chefs on front lines to help banish the stigma surrounding cannabis with her art of food.
